I am a veteran of Vietnam, having joined the Army right out of high school in 1967. From a blue-collar family (as were many of the young men who ended up in Vietnam), I was oblivious to the politics and history of Vietnam.
It is impossible to overstate the empathy and erudition with which Bui Diem lays out the history of the Vietnam War in this superb work. From the beginning to beyond the end of the war, he was front and center present and actively engaged in the political fight to keep his country free from communist domination.
There are a lot of books on the Vietnam War. Many of them cover soldiers' experiences on the front or Washington politicians making the "hard decisions".
